Work Element from The Luthiers' Workshops
Breaking down the concepts and construction of previous work allowed for the fragmenting of the building into undefined scales. Each of the three components acts as machines, holding as much or as little detail as the reader desires. Whether being seen as a 1:50 external covering, a 1:5 arm rest or 1:1 door detail, they all start to explore the connection details of the plaster, timber and steel within the building. The examination of a suspended structure is started to be explored within the models, reflecting the reduced implications upon the site that I wish to be achieved.

Cast Instrument Testing Device - 1:10

An Influenced Device
Using the cast fragment as a base, this drawing integrates previous work and explores how the device can determine the structure and external skin of the building.
With the ambiguous fragments, their success was within their ability to hold as much or a little detail as the reader desired. But the solidifying of the negotiable scale gives a tangeable constant for the design process. This model, acting an internal fragment at 1:10 constrains the idea of abstraction yet without the aesthetic compromise.
The ‘wall’ tesing device acts as a reference point for the makers, with the four instruments crafted in the building being cast into the form. Being cast in plaster at 1:1, the form would be worn, leaving marks of the maker, preserving detail of the craft for future generations and allowing the building to be re-defined over time.
